What is the Texas Success Initiative?

The Texas Success Initiative is a program of required testing, placement, and developmental education mandated by the Texas Legislature. It is required for all undergraduate students at any Texas public institution of higher education. There are exemptions from the Success Initiative testing requirement based on a student's SAT, ACT, or TAAS scores, or on the prior completion of an associate's or a bachelor's degree.

The Success Initiative tests include THEA, COMPASS, ASSET and ACCUPLACER. Any of these tests may be taken prior to enrollment to satisfy the Success Initiative testing requirement.

For more information about the Texas Success Initiative, contact an advisor in the UScholars Academic Advising Center, 320 Student Service Center. Contact your academic advisor for information on how UH placement criteria will affect your course selection.
