What are the steps for residency reclassification?

Generally, you may be considered a Texas resident if, prior to the time you enroll in a Texas college or university, you (or your parent, if you are a dependent for federal income tax purposes):

- have lived in Texas for at least 12 months,
- have been “gainfully employed” in Texas for at least 12 months, and
- can prove that you have established Texas as your permanent home.

To be considered for Texas residency please submit a Residency Questionnaire.

A copy of the Residency Questionnaire can be downloaded. Adobe Acrobat Reader is required to open this file.

You should attach documentation showing when you arrived in Texas, as well as proof that you have applied for permanent residency status (if applicable), to your completed Residency Questionnaire. Residency Questionnaires are normally reviewed within 10 working days of receipt.

A student who has not yet applied to the $uh is not eligible for a review of residency status.
